But if there's interest in this sort of thing I'll take a printer to one of the businesses in the area and have a real workshop. When creating an event, only businesses that you manage will be available to host the event. If you don't manage a place, only your username is available as the host, and the event is private. This way random people can't add fake events for a business they don't manage.

Only members can subscribe to events, and that does work now. When you are subscribed to an event, you will receive a notification if the event changes or gets cancelled. You will also see the event on your home page and can opt in for email notifications so you don't miss the event.
